ChatGPT Go subscription available for free for 12 months in India: here’s how to claim it

Highlights
  • ChatGPT Go is an India-specific premium subscription launched by OpenAI in August this year.
  • It is powered by GPT-5, OpenAI’s latest and most advanced multimodal large language model.
  • You can claim the premium subscription for free on the web and Android app.

OpenAI has announced that its users in India can now get one year of free access to ChatGPT Go, its India-specific subscription tier designed for affordable access to advanced AI features. The announcement was made at OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, as part of the company’s broader push to expand ChatGPT’s user base in the country. The plan otherwise costs Rs 399 per month.

Introduced in August this year, ChatGPT Go runs on GPT‑5 and boasts several upgrades over the free tier: 10 times higher message limits, daily image generations, and support for file and image uploads. The plan also offers better support in 95 languages including Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Odia and other Indian languages, besides double the memory for personalised responses.

ChatGPT Go free

This promotional offer is available for a limited time to both new and existing users of ChatGPT in India, provided their OpenAI accounts are in good standing, which means there have been no missed or declined payments. OpenAI has not specified when the offer will end. Users can redeem it via the web or Android versions of ChatGPT, while iOS will roll out next week on the Apple App Store.

All web users have to do is tap on ‘Try ChatGPT Go,’ while Android users can tap on ‘Upgrade to Go for Free’ once they open the app. If the option doesn’t show instantly, it’s available through the app settings. There is a minimal temporary verification charge at setup of Re 1 for UPI and Rs 2 for card payments.

Those already paying for ChatGPT Go, Plus, or Pro can take advantage of the promotion, too. Once they turn on the offer, their billing date automatically extends by 12 months. Users who signed up through the Apple App Store will need to first cancel their subscription and wait for the billing period to expire before they can sign up again. OpenAI says that any Go subscriber who has been charged following the announcement will receive an additional 12 months of free access after the current cycle has concluded.

OpenAI reveals India was one of the first markets to receive the ChatGPT Go tier subscription, and the paying user base more than doubled within the first month of launch, which led to the company launching the plan in 90 markets globally. India is ChatGPT’s second-largest and one of the fastest-growing markets.
