Huawei has officially launched the ultra-thin Mate 70 Air smartphone in China, with pre-orders already live. The Mate 70 Air is a direct competitor with devices like the iPhone Air, Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, and Motorola X70 Air (China), which launched globally as the Motorola Edge 70 Air.

Measuring 6.6mm thick, the Mate 70 Air is a bit thicker than the 5.6mm iPhone Air (which is currently the thinnest phone around) but compensates with a much bigger 6,500mAh battery, roughly twice the size of the one in the iPhone Air. The Huawei phone has a large 7-inch 1.5K+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 18.8:9 aspect ratio making for a roomier display than the 6.7-inch screen on both the Galaxy S25 Edge and X70 Air.

Under the hood, Huawei provides two variants of the Kirin chipset: Kirin 9020B for 12GB RAM versions and Kirin 9020A for 16GB models, both running HarmonyOS 5.1. The 6,500mAh battery supports 66W wired fast charging via USB 2.0.

The rear quad-camera module has a 50MP ultra-large sensor main camera supported by an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 12MP telephoto with 3x zoom featuring an RYYB sensor and a 1.5MP red maple multispectral sensor for enhanced colour accuracy. There is a centrally placed punch-hole hosting a 10.7MP front camera. Huawei’s device also supports Wi-Fi 7+, side-mounted fingerprint unlocking, two-way satellite messaging and achieves an IP68/IP69 water and dust resistance, which is impressive for a slim phone and matches that of the Motorola X70 Air.

The Huawei Mate 70 Air starts from 4,199 yuan (around Rs 52,000) for the 12GB+256GB model and goes up to 5,199 yuan (around Rs 64,600) for the 16GB+512GB variant. It is available in Obsidian Black, Feather White, and Silver Brocade.

While today’s slim phones sell largely on their super-slim design and ecosystem, Huawei hopes to sway buyers with a larger display, superior battery, and better camera system, making the phone more well-rounded in the ultra-thin category.
