Excellent Ultrabook at a cheap price ....!!!!

I was looking for a lightweight notebook as my travel companion. I was confused between Acer v5-121/131 and Asus X201E. I visited local showrooms in Kolkata for a hands on check. I finally choose this one. I bought it there in local showroom as I was eager to get this and could not wait for 2 more days for Flipkart. I got a good pocket saving too. I must mention at first about the build quality. It has a solid feel like the expensive ultrabooks. And the textured pattern on the lid give you the feel of a 50K notebook. It may feel you like using Macbook air. The hinge is excellent and seems to be long lasting. The display resolution of 1366X768 in a 11.6 inch size give a high ppi than the 14" / 15" one. The display looks stunning and vivid. Though it is not an IPS screen, but the display gives a good viewing angle. The weight is about 1.3kg, which is an important factor for me to choose this one. It is light enough to carry in two finger. Anybody, who has to carry his/her notebook daily, know the pain of a regular notebook. The weight of the charger is also a consideration. My HP notebook charger weigh 850gm. But, this one's charger is very lightweight, like a mobile phone charger. So, you can carry both easily. Next, coming to the performance of this netbook. As you know, the mini notebook are meant for light use and not for heavy works like - video editing, heavy gaming etc. However, this X201E comes with a Intel Celeron 1007U 1.5Ghz dual core processor which has better benchmark score than my core2duo T5870 2.0Ghz. I get better performance than the old one. The windows 8 experience index is better in it. The user experience is just excellent. The battery back up of the device is good. I get 4 to 4.5 hrs real backup with 3G or Wi-fi on. That is good enough for use with normal settings. You can change settings to battery saver mode to get more back up. The sound quality of the device is awesome for music and movies. It has a clear loud sound in speakers and also in earphones. The large touchpad with multitouch gesture support is very useful. There are - one USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, one VGA, one HDMI, one LAN port, Wi-fi and bluetooth 4.0 for the connectivity. Now, coming to few limitations. The DVD came in the box contains drivers for WIN -7 and 8 but it has only 64bit drivers. I searched in the company's website, but could not find drivers for 32bit. However, I installed win 8 32 bit in it with no problems as the generic drivers supports the devices by own. The device has non user replaceable battery and RAM. The RAM is on the mainboard, and cannot be removed/ upgraded. The battery is inside the back cover. These are done to make the device more compact, solid and lightweight. I have searched for this notebook's battery in asus service center and found it is available with them. So you need not worry for that. The RAM is a bit lower side, I was worried much about the RAM before buying this. But it does not create any problem for my works. I use it for - office application, internet surfing, photo editing, movie viewing, music playing. With windows 7 / 8 64bit, it supports multitasking too. Who wants more in 18.3K notebook? To summarize, it is an excellent 11.6 inch notebook with advantages of - lightweight, high performance, good looking, excellent display, expensive feel, good battery back up. There is limitation of non up gradable 2GB DDR3 RAM but that is not a constrain in regular use. I would highly recommend it.

A terrific buy

At 19600, it is sensational. Although I had to get adjusted at first since it is quite slower than my Vaio's i5, but it lived upto the expectations.Performs very well on not too heavy/ graphic rich applications. Perfect for travelling. Although multi-tasking sometimes held it up for a sec or so, but it went okay. Battery backup is decent 4 hours, a thing i did not expect earlier since it has a 2 cell battery. Build quality is decent and it feels good in hand. A few concerns though: 1) The battery takes ages to charge - i guess almost 3 hours each time for a full charge which is frustrating. 2) The laptop has no CD drive, so installing an Operating System can be a little cumbersome. For a not so tech savvy person, you might have to shell some money at a computer center for installing it through a pen drive/ portable CD drive.. 3) ASUS at its worst, the laptop is accompanied with a Hardware Driver's CD. But they built the laptop without a CD drive. At-least they could have supplied a pendrive - even a locked one would do, but atleast the customer will get the drivers with the laptop. Big thumbs down to ASUS on this.
