Trivia

Prior to theatrical release, controversy arose when behind-the-scenes footage surfaced and appeared to show a distressed dog being forcibly submerged into turbulent pool water during filming. As a result of the leaked footage, the filmmakers chose to cancel the U.S. premiere. Controversially, on February 4, 2017 the American Humane Association stated that the footage was misleadingly edited and no abuse had taken place.

The dog breeds that were used in this film are: Beagle-German Shepherd-terrier mix, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and St. Bernard-Australian Shepherd mix.

Final film of Peggy Lipton.

There is a 7 year age differences between Britt Robertson (Hannah) and KJ Apa (Ethan).

Dennis Quaid wore colored contact lenses to make his eyes brown. They are blue in real life.

Popular Dialogues

"Bailey: I had a purpose, I was needed again and again and again. With each new life I was learning a new lesson."

"[last lines] Bailey: So, in all my lives as a dog, here's what I've learned. Have fun, obviously. Whenever possible, find someone to save, and save them. Lick the ones you love. Don't get all sad-faced about what happened and scrunchy-faced about what could. Just be here now. Adult Ethan: [throws the flattened football] Go! Okay, go get it. Bailey: Be - here - now. That's a dog's purpose."
