Matt Dillon was actually James Dearden's third choice to play the lead role. Originally Dearden wanted River Phoenix to play Jonathan, but Phoenix didn't relate to the material saying he couldn't play someone so evil. Then Dearden approached Kiefer Sutherland who turned down the offer due to scheduling conflicts. Finally Dillon got the role and Dearden was so impressed with his performance that he later said Dillon should've been his first choice all along.
The movie is a remake of 1956's A Kiss Before Dying (1956) directed by Gerd Oswald and starring Robert Wagner as the killer, and actresses Virginia Leith and Joanne Woodward as the two sisters. In this remake, actress Sean Young plays both the parts of the sisters.
The movie was nominated for two Razzies at the 12th Golden Raspberry Awards in 1992. For her dual role as twins in this film, actress Sean Young won Razzies for both Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress. With this movie, Young became the first actress to be awarded two Golden Raspberry Awards in the same year.
Adam Horovitz is seen driving a Volkswagen Beetle in the film - in real life, as Ad-Rock (of the Beastie Boys) - he wore a VW emblem as a medallion on stage.
Sean Young replaced Bridget Fonda. Young signed on after Fonda quit the production due to scheduling conflicts.
