    Romantic comedy about an honest Mexican immigrant who struggles without a green card by selling oranges on a street corner. One day a limousine pulls up and he is handed a check for $1,000,000 with instructions that he is to give the check back in 30 days. Initially he uses the check to convince people to extend credit to him. In the meantime he also attracts a woman who is in a dead end relationship with a bossy businessman. STORY

Story
Romantic comedy about an honest Mexican immigrant who struggles without a green card by selling oranges on a street corner. One day a limousine pulls up and he is handed a check for $1,000,000 with instructions that he is to give the check back in 30 days. Initially he uses the check to convince people to extend credit to him. In the meantime he also attracts a woman who is in a dead end relationship with a bossy businessman. At the end of the 30 days, he finds his life in turmoil, the things he got on credit is repossessed, and he is being evicted from his dwelling and being sent back to Mexico.

Very few people know that this movie (along with the 1957 version and the 1946 version) are loosely based upon a short story by Mark Twain called "The Million Pound Bank Note", published in 1893. The story line in the book, and the three movie versions, basically only share the theme of the "bank note" or "check" that cannot be cashed or spent.

Jorge tells Juan that it's polite to burp during a meal, it shows that your enjoying the cooks food. This is true in China, and Taiwan.

Gerardo Mejia who plays Flaco is known as a one hit wonder for his 1991 hit song Rico Suave.
