Shelley Winters hated her role as "Rose-Ann", primarily because, as a supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, she was very uncomfortable playing a racist. Winters was actually overwhelmed and speechless the night she won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Scenes of Sidney Poitier and Elizabeth Hartman kissing were excised from the film when it was shown in theaters in the American South, where many states still had laws against what they called "race-mixing".
Elizabeth Hartman wore a pair of opaque contact lenses that not only made her appear blind, but genuinely deprived her of her sight.
Patty Duke was offered the lead part of Selina D'Arcy. Her managers, John and Ethel Ross, did not want her to take the part because they felt that playing a blind person so close to the time she portrayed Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker (1962) would stereotype her for future roles.
According to writer and director Guy Green, many girls auditioned for the role of Selina. However, as soon as Elizabeth Hartman walked into his office, he knew she was the one.
"Selina D'Arcy: [Gordon kisses Selina on forehead] Was that a kiss? Gordon Ralfe: [Nodding] It was a kiss. Selina D'Arcy: Kiss me again. [Gordon kisses her forehead again] Selina D'Arcy: [Grabs Gordon's face and kisses him on the lips] Oh Gordon... Gordon... oh I wish I'd never been done over. Gordon Ralfe: [Pulls her away] What did you say? Selina D'Arcy: Nothing. Gordon Ralfe: I'm sorry. You were much sinned against. Selina D'Arcy: Are you angry with me. Do you think I'm bad... dirty? Gordon Ralfe: No I don't. Selina D'Arcy: I said what I did because I love you so much. Gordon Ralfe: I know why you said it. I'm glad you said it. You brought me back to Earth. Selina D'Arcy: I didn't want you to come back to Earth. I wanted you to make love with me."
"Selina D'Arcy: I know everything I need to know about you. I love you. [touching Gordon's face] Selina D'Arcy: I know you're good, and kind. I know you're colored and I... Gordon Ralfe: What's that? Selina D'Arcy: ...And I think you're beautiful! Gordon Ralfe: [smiling] Beautiful? Most people would say the opposite. Selina D'Arcy: Well that's because they don't know you."
