Due to conflicts in her personal life, Beth Grant was unable to reprise the role of Sissy, so the part went to Dale Dickey. Dickey appeared as a different character in Sordid Lives: The Series (2008), but she was intimately familiar with Sissy, whom she'd played in a "Sordid Lives" stage production.
Sarah Hunley, who played Juanita, died before the film opened in theaters.
Scott Presley, who plays Roger the hairdresser, appeared in the TV series but not in the original film. In real life, he has a famous drag act in which he plays Belle Aire.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film "grossed an impressive $40,000 in its opening weekend" in Palm Springs, CA, where it made its premiere.
Parts of the movie, set in rural Texas, were filmed in Canada.
"Earl 'Brother Boy' Ingram: Save me! Make all the ugly in the world go away!"
"Latrelle: Well, mama. It's been 17 years since you died. The day you caused so much chaos and all hell broke loose. My son came out as gay right in front of your coffin. And is now legally married to a black man. Thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court. I'll give you a moment to roll over in your grave."
