Andra Day becomes the second actress to be nominated at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards for portraying Billie Holiday. The first being Diana Ross for Lady Sings the Blues (1972). Coincidentally, the role of Billie Holiday was also the screen debut of both actresses.

Evan Ross's mother, Diana Ross, played Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues (1972).

The screen debut of Andra Day, for which she received a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance.

Andra Day receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for this film, along with Viola Davis for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020), marked only the second time in Academy Award history in which two women of color have been nominated for Best Actress in the same year. The first occurrence happened 48 years prior, in which Cicely Tyson was nominated for Sounder (1972) and Diana Ross, whom like Andra Day, was also nominated Best Actress for playing Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues (1972).

Popular Dialogues

"Billie Holiday: You know, the people that are hardest on me are my own race. I need help; not jail time."

"Jimmy Fletcher: Despite all of the shit in her life, she's made something of herself and you can't take it because she's strong, beautiful and black."
