The film was the biggest blockbuster at the box office in 1993.
It is a remake of the hit Kannada movie Kittu Puttu, starring Vishnuvardhan which itself a remake of 1967 Tamil movie Anubavi Raja Anubavi and the Tamil version itself remade into Hindi as Do Phool, starring Vinod Mehra and Mehmood, released in 1977. This version was also remade into Telugu in 1995, starring Venkatesh and Ali.
Three actors Kadar Khan,Govinda and Raj Babbar had a double role in the film.
Chunkey was considered a lucky mascot. He was responsible for the come back hits of Sunny Deol (paap ki duniya), Anil Kapoor (tezaab), and Govinda (Aankhen). It was said Chunkey could help everyone's career but his own!
The overseas distributors had zero expectations from the film Aankhen and did not release the movie in theater's in Canada. It went straight to VHS video. All focus was on Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and how many showings they could fit in the theater's. That film flopped badly and Aankhen became the biggest block buster of 1993.
