The title is director David Lowery's "mondegreen" - a mishearing of a song lyric - and has no actual meaning. He had been wanting to use it as a movie title for years.
Director David Lowery said Rooney Mara (Ruth) was the only actress he met with, and Casey Affleck (Bob) was the first actor he met with, "I had a gut instinct of who would be perfect for these roles. It was those actors. Luckily for me, they said yes."
Rami Malek originally auditioned for the role of Sweetie, but the role went to Nate Parker. However director David Lowery was so impressed with Malek's audition that he decided to give him the small role of Will later in the film.
In an interview for Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013), Rooney Mara revealed her character Ruth, and Casey Affleck's character Bob, have known each other since they were "12 years old."
Director David Lowery said Ain'tThem Bodies Saints (2013) was a full-bodied script, but it still had a lot of room for improvisation, "There were scenes that weren't there on the page -- just a sentence saying something happens. I was like, "We'll figure this out when we shoot it."
"Bob Muldoon: Every day I wake up thinking today's the day I'm gonna see you. And one of those days, it will be so. And then we can ride off to somewhere. Somewhere far away."
"Ruth Guthrie: I haven't slept in four years. And I'm tired. I'm so goddamn tired. Patrick Wheeler: Then rest."
