Women Talking Review

The fascinating and devastating book "Women Talking" by Miriam Toews examines the effects of sexual assault in a remote religious community. The novel, which is based on actual events, follows a group of women as they struggle to accept the horrendous abuse they have suffered at the hands of the males in their neighbourhood. The way Toews depicts the women's resiliency and strength in the face of trauma is what gives this novel such tremendous force. Even as they struggle with the challenging problems of faith, justice, and forgiveness, the women find healing and hope through their dialogues. She addresses the delicate subject issue with care and grace in Toews' exquisite and heartbreaking words. The end effect is a book that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply moving. "Women Talking" is an important and timely book that discusses the long-lasting effects of sexual assault and the role that community and solidarity play in the healing process. Anybody interested in the relationship between gender, social justice, and religion should read it.

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Director Sarah Polley explained more about the colour grading of the film, explaining how they played with saturation levels to create a feeling of "a world that had faded in the past". This is why the film appears to be almost black-and-white, but not quite.

This is the first film from Orion Pictures to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture since The Silence of the Lambs (1991), a 31-year gap, and the first since it was purchased by MGM in 1997.

Throughout filming, the cast were advised not to put on make-up and shave until wrapping.

The first time Rooney Mara and Claire Foy have starred in the same film, having both played Lisbeth Salander, in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) and The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018), respectively.

In the novel by Miriam Toews, the music coming from the truck driven by the census taker (and subsequently hummed by August) is "California Dreamin' " by the Mamas and the Papas. In the story as relayed within the movie adaptation, the song becomes "Daydream Believer" by The Monkees, also played during the end credits.

Popular Dialogues

"Ona: Hope for the unknown is good. It is better than hatred of the familiar."

"Ona: Why does love - the absence of love, the end of love, the need for love - result in so much violence?"
