The show was inspired by the book "Courtroom 302: A Year Behind the Scenes in an American Criminal Courthouse" written by Steve Bogira, about the criminal justice system in the city of Chicago. Steve Bogira helped write the pilot and is consultant for the show.
Consulting producer Gil Garcetti is the former Los Angeles County District Attorney (1992-2000) and is the father of (as of 2019) Mayor of Los Angeles (elected 2013 and re-elected 2017) Eric Garcetti.
