With the help of body doubles and green screens, Seth Rogen shot his scenes as Herschel first then as Ben after shaving and getting his hair done.
The film's poster was taken with a preserved camera made in the 19th century.
Seth Rogen's disdain of fake beards not looking realistic enough made him insist on growing his own facial hair to play Herschel. This led to a bit of an annoying production schedule, as sets where both characters appear had to be put aside and returned to later on - with all the Herschel scenes shot first, then all the Ben scenes shot after Rogen shaved (rather than shooting the two parts sequentially with the character changing costumes).
The film is based upon the 2013 short story "Sell Out" by Simon Rich.
This is the first Seth Rogen-produced film that is not rated R by the MPAA.
