IMDbTony Toponi, from An American Tail (1986), returns as a principal cast in this film and An American Tail: The Mystery of the Night Monster (1999), which he was known as a fan favorite, but without Bridget. Tony's role was limited as a background cameo in An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991) and was absent in Fievel's Adventures in the West (1992) because of Pat Musick's acting difficulties during those periods.
Despite Tony's return in the series, his girlfriend, Bridget, was unable to be featured in this movie due to her actress, Cathianne Blore, was in bad health while battling cancer during the production of this movie, as the staff couldn't find a replacement voice for the character. This is also due to the stereotypical treatment being used on Tony.
Tony's pursuing the very young Lenape Princess Cholena while his real girlfriend Bridget was quietly withdrawn from the film was often questioned by fans. According to history, men were often womanized by Indigenous women stereotypes, except Cholena appears to be a young girl mouse masquerading an Indigenous maiden. Despite this is infidelity to the point, Bridget's withdrawal and silence from this film while this was illustrated owes to the presence of the then-child actor Thomas Dekker, who was victimized when he was much younger. Despite being unseen, Bridget was quietly hinted by little Fievel's angry look towards Tony while witnessing his infidelity.
Due to Phillip Glasser growing up and having his voice change, he did not reprise Fievel for this film, as well as the next film, An American Tail: The Mystery of the Night Monster (1999). Instead he was voiced by Thomas Dekker, who was also the current voice of Littlefoot, the Child Protagonist of The Land Before Time series at the time.
This is Elaine Bilstad's final character role as she died of heart failure a year after this film's completion and voicing Cholena. Owing to this, the film was posthumously delayed for over a year as Bilstad was contributed to this film.
"Cholena: Yes, father? [Tony develops a crush on Cholena] Tony: Buona sera, bella signorina. [Italian translation for "Good evening, nice lady."] Chief Wulisso: This is my daughter, Cholena. She will serve as your guide. Tony: No kiddin'? Fantastic! Terrif... [Fievel angrily glances at Tony to get him straight] Tony: If you have nothing better to do."
"Fievel: I'll never forget you, Cholena. [Cholena hugs Fievel goodbye] Cholena: And I'll never forget you. [then hugs Tanya] Cholena: Farewell. Tanya: Thank you. [Cholena kisses Tony on the cheek, which Tanya catches him as he starts to faint] Tanya: Steady there, Romeo, or we all go up in smoke."
