When Amitabh Bachchan was shown the original film, he was told to choose any role, for the hindi version. When Amitabh saw the original, he wanted the small role of the forest officer. This role was expanded for Amitabh in the hindi version. This film was Rajnikant's first hindi film.
The villain's names are Amar Akbar Anthony, playing tribute to the superhit film Amar Akbar Anthony in which Amitabh Bachchan played one of the lead characters.
Amitabh's character Jan Nisar Akhtar was named after Javed Akhtar's father.
After the film released ,the high court of Allahabad sued/charged the producers for showing a murder in the courtroom. Immediatly after that , there were two actual court room murders and the charges against Andha Kanoon were dropped.
The first movie in which Hema Malini despite being a top heroine, did not have a romantic hero opposite her. She was cast as the hero's sister and her role was on par with that of Rajanikanth. Parveen Babi was considered for the romantic role opposite Rajnikanth but Reena Roy was signed when Parveen Babi left the country due to her illness.
