The first live-action Astérix film to be a fully original story not based on one or several of the comic books. Previously, the animated films The Twelve Tasks of Asterix (1976) and Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion (2018) were also original stories, although the former was written and co-directed by Astérix creators René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.
While this marks Vincent Cassel's first appearance in an Astérix film, his father Jean-Pierre Cassel previously appeared in Asterix at the Olympic Games (2008) as the druid Panoramix while his now former wife Monica Bellucci portrayed Cleopatra in Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002). Moreover, the character Maccabaeus in the comic book "Asterix and the Picts" was based on Vincent Cassel's features.
Historically the real Emperor Han Xuandi had two daughters, Princess Jingwu and Princess Guantao Shi, who both lived in the year 50 BC (the year in which all Asterix stories are set).
Prior to this film being announced in November 2017, Michel Hazanavicius, Franck Gastambide and Fabien Onteniente were said to be in contention to direct a fifth Astérix film. Onteniente was hoping to direct an adaptation of "Asterix in Corsica", the twentieth comic book in the series. Gastambide coincidentally ended up in a role in this film.
Marks the first Astérix film, and the rare comic book film, to be directed by its lead actor. Alain Chabat had previously both directed and acted in Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002), but in the supporting role of Cesar.
