The movie was filmed between February and March of 2001 in Auckland, New Zealand.
The movie was loosely inspired by an incident on June 24, 1998 where an F2 tornado struck the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Ohio which resulted in the loss of off-site power, the movie bears very little resemblance to the actual event.
While filming, the cast and crew took tours around the North Island of New Zealand. Helicopter tours were taken and the American cast was welcomed by the Kiwi People of New Zealand.
The 16:9, HD Version of the movie has only been aired on TV and has never been released on DVD or Blu-Ray as of 2018.
