Ayali, created and written by Muthu Kumar, tells the story of a young teenage girl, Tamizhselvi, who defies the oppressive customs and traditions of her village and strives to become a doctor. In a village where girls are not allowed to study beyond ninth grade and are expected to be married off as soon as they hit puberty, Tamizhselvi challenges the status quo and fights for her rights. The show also addresses the issue of misogyny and the oppression of women in the name of religion. The writing is balanced and manages to incorporate humor and satire without overpowering the serious subject matter. Lovelyn Chandrasekhar delivers a phenomenal performance as the emotionally damaged woman pushed into a pit. Abi Nakshatra carries the responsibility of the show on her shoulders and delivers a great performance as well. The camera work and music support the cause strongly and the costume design is detailed. While the show does tend to get preachy at times, the writing saves it. Ayali proves that not all good shows need a complex structure to be called phenomenal and is a must-watch.
