Visa | Small Town
It is the summer of 1980 in East Germany and, alone, Barbara is confined to living and working as a doctor in a small provincial town - her punishment for attempting to emigrate to the West. She has only one focus; to escape and for this, she has to wait patiently. Until Andre, her supervisor in the hospital, takes her off course. Are his motives of love or duty to the authorities? The day-to-day pretense, and content supervision slowly take their toll as the tension builds.

The Torgau workhouse to which Stella is sent is the Torgau Juvenile Detention Centre. The Centre, which ran from 1964 to 1989, was for the "re-education" of young people aged 14 to 18. Inmates had committed no crimes, but were deemed to need education so that they could fit in with the norms of socialist life in East Germany.
The hospital from which Barbara came was the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. This is a large teaching hospital, affiliated with both Humboldt University and Freie Universität Berlin. Under the East German Government, it was the most prestigious hospital in East Germany and received large amounts of funding to make it a flagship of health-care.
The analysis of the Rembrandt painting in an earlier scene by Andre is taken from the 1st chapter of W.G Sebald's book "The Rings of Saturn."
When Barbara cycles to meet the train on her way for the money hand off she rides past a sign that reads "We walk toward the future with optimism."
Germany's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 85th Academy Awards 2013.
"André: Doctor Wolff will be working with us. She is from Berlin... from the Charite Hospital, and has decided... Assistenzärztin Schulze: We have introduced ourselves."
