Trey Parker was offered the chance to direct the film and was, according to Parker, offered $1.5 million for the job, but declined - he would create South Park (1997) instead with fellow colleague Matt Stone.
The film is banned in Malaysia for being unsuitable for children in that country.
The only time a character (in this case Cody) shows hatred towards Barney.
John Landis was asked by PolyGram to direct this film. They wanted Landis to do another movie for them, having done An American Werewolf In London (1981) for them 17 years earlier. But Landis turned it down because he was working on Blues Brothers 2000 (1998) at the same time and Landis even said that he had no interest into directing a children's film, especially with what happened with him on the making of Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983).
Originally planned as a direct-to-video release.
"Barney, Barney: A towel, please. [he steps out of the shower, Marcella gives him a towel] Barney, Barney: Thank you Marcella. Marcella: He knows my name. Barney, Barney: Oh, and thank you, Cody. It's so nice to have a shower after a long car trip."
"[first lines] Barney: [In the blank screen before the credits] Oh, boy! Looks like everybody's here! BJ: Oh, man! This is gonna be so cool! Baby Bop: Oh, I can't wait to eat some popcorn and sing along! Oh, and see the movie! Barney: Well, then, here we go! Baby Bop: Roll 'em! [the film starts]"
