Rotten TomatoesBeau is a character played by Joaquin Phoenix who exhibits extreme anxiousness. He has a flight home to see his mother on the anniversary of his father's passing. He can't make his flight because of various circumstances, but he eventually finds his way back home slowly. In a word, that is the plot, although there are a lot of other plots as well. Beau is Afraid is undoubtedly one of the most original films in a while. Beau's sense of security fluctuates throughout the story, which is told in segments of varying lengths and tones. The riddle you strive to solve is whether his agony is actual or imagined, a memory or a nightmare. Joaquin Phoenix gives a disturbing performance, but the agonizingly long wait is not as satisfying. The play's lack of a clear plot makes the actor feel overburdened as he becomes one with his character's horrific trip.

The movie was speculated to be an expansion of a short film entitled "Beau (2011)", as well as a theatrical adaptation of a leaked 2014-draft script also entitled "Beau Is Afraid", both directed and written respectively by Aster. This was later confirmed as many scenes presented in the trailer of the film coincided with portions from the script.
The film was initially described by director and writer Ari Aster as a "4-hour-long nightmare comedy". The runtime of the theatrical cut runs just one minute shy of three hours.
With a budget of $35 million, "Beau Is Afraid" is A24's biggest/most expensive production to date, surpassing the previous title holder, "Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)".
The film was originally titled "Disappointment Blvd." when it was announced in 2021.
Nathan Lane described the movie as "the Jewish 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'" and "an epic tale of guilt and codependency--the story of [his] life."
"Grace: Rip him apart!"
