According to Michael Jackson, his theme song for this film, "Ben", played during the final scene and the closing credits, was one of his favorite songs. It was written for the film by lyricist Don Black and composer Walter Scharf. It was also the title track on Jackson's second solo album, released just before his 14th birthday, and became a #1 hit on the pop charts -- a first as a solo artist for Jackson.
According to a September 1972 Los Angeles Times news item, the rat playing Ben won a PATSY Award, which honors animal performers.
According to studio publicity notes, Moe Di Sesso, who trained the 500 rats used in Willard (1971), trained approximately 4,000 rats for this film. The film's pressbook implied that there would be a second sequel featuring 10,000 rats to be released in 1973, but it was never made.
Although Willard (1971) was based on the novel "Ratman's Notebooks" by Stephen Gilbert, this sequel only uses the character of Ben the rat and has a new story and original screenplay written by Gilbert Ralston, who also wrote the screenplay for the previous film.
Although the on-screen opening credits "introduce" child actor Lee Montgomery, he had previously appeared sixth-billed in the Walt Disney film The Million Dollar Duck (1971) and in a handful of episodes from various TV shows.
"[last lines] Danny Garrison: [crying, as Michael Jackson sings "Ben" in the score] You'll get well, Ben, and I'll get well. We'll get well, Ben. [places Ben on a handkerchief] Danny Garrison: We'll get well, Ben. No one's gonna hurt one of my friends. No, sir. [gets out first aid kit, takes a cotton swab and gently rubs Ben's wounds] Danny Garrison: It's okay. [Ben squeaks] Danny Garrison: You're the only friend I have. I love you, Ben. [Michael Jackson sings the final verse of "Ben" as the credits roll]"
"Danny Garrison: [singing while showing his Ben marionette to the real Ben] Start the day, oh, come along now, Ben. Come on out, before I count to ten. If you stay, you will miss all the fun and there's room for everyone."
