Real residents of Carthage, Texas who knew the real Bernie Tiede and Marjorie Nugent appear in the film providing commentary on the events.
The owners of the Hawthorn Funeral Home in Carthage, Texas, where Bernie Tiede met Marjorie Nugent, refused to allow the film to use the name of the funeral home.
Bernie Tiede lived in director Richard Linklater's garage apartment between 2014 and 2016. Ironically in 2016 Bernie was sent back to prison again, this time for life.
The film is based on a 1998 article in Texas Monthly which was written by Skip Hollandsworth.
Filmed in Bastrop, Texas.
"Townsperson: [talking about Marjorie Nugent] She would chew your ass out at the drop of a hat. I mean, she'd rip you a brand new, three-bedroom, two-bath, double-wide asshole. No problem."
"Café Waitress: It's not as bad as people say it is. He only shot her four times, not five. Danny Buck: You know what? You people are as crazy as coot."
