Rotten TomatoesBlack Bird is a crime drama Apple TV+ series based on the 2010 autobiographical novel In with the Devil: a Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by James Keene that tells the story of a promising young football star who denies football scholarships to run his family business. The show's direction and cinematography are great, as the director puts together an engaging tale that is further elevated by the cast members. Actors Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauserhe shine in the lead roles, with Sepideh Moafi, Greg Kinnear, and Ray Liotta in the supporting cast. Further, the themes of prison drama and moral dilemma are present throughout the show, as it attempts to showcase a disturbing storyline to keep the viewer on the edge of their seats. Overall, Black Bird is a richly-written and character-driven crime drama that is made for the fans of classic films in this genre.

Ray Liotta died before the release of the show, so the third episode is dedicated to his memory. His daughter Karsen Liotta appears near the end of Black Bird: The Place I Lie (2022) as Audrey, the girl being interviewed by FBI agents about her bizarre past encounters with serial killer suspect Larry Hall.
Based on the true story of James Keene, a one-time drug dealer, trying to elicit a confession from serial killer Larry Hall. Keene himself can be glimpsed playing correctional officer #8 in the season finale Black Bird: You Promised (2022).
"In with the Devil" production is using the working title "Hans Bubby" and filmed in New Orleans in a secure location.
"Big Jim" Keene was actually a firefighter in the city of Kankakee & not a Kankakee police officer.
In Black Bird: The Place I Lie (2022), when Brian Miller and Lauren McCauley are looking for Tricia Reitler's body, one of the songs playing on the radio is "Run-Around" by Blues Traveler - which is what Larry Hall was doing to the police with his distorted facts.
