Contrary to popular belief, Broadchurch is not based on or a remake of Danish show Forbrydelsen (2007), and the script for Broadchurch actually predates The Killing by at least five years. Chris Chibnall originally had the idea for Broadchurch and started working on the script in 2002, however, it took him ten years to get the show on air.
By the end of its first series, it had built an audience to 8.7 million.
Throughout the series, all the mobile phones used by Alec Hardy are all David Tennant's real life mobile phones.
Only Olivia Colman was (accidentally) told the killer's identity at the outset of filming. Even David Tennant was kept in the dark along with everyone else.
Series 3 received nearly 11 million views, making it ITV's most watched crime drama.
"DS Ellie Miller: Most people have a moral compass. DI Alec Hardy: Compasses break."
"DS Ellie Miller: You don't eat fish and chips? What kind of Scot are you?"
