IMDbIt's always more enjoyable to watch a film that is also based on a real incident, and it's even better when you recall the events as they occurred. The film begins off slowly but gradually becomes more stressful as it progresses. As talented as Tom Hanks is, I began to believe that this is a role that several people could play. Then I saw the final 20 minutes and saw why they recruited Tom Hanks. When you watch a movie knowing how it ends yet still cry, it's due of outstanding filmmaking, just like in the movie Apollo 13. That is the category where this movie falls. A film that gathers momentum throughout the entire movie. It starts slowly, but towards the conclusion, you're wishing for more. It appealed to me. Overall, stressful and makes you consider all sides of the story and whether or not the pirates were truly terrible.

In real life, one of the men from Richard Phillips' crew sued him after the incident. He claimed that Phillips was well aware of the danger in the Somali waters but went in anyway endangering all of them because he wanted to get the shipment to the harbour faster, even though the shipping company itself sent him a note advising him to avoid the Somali seas.
The line "Look at me! I'm the captain now!", was an ad-lib by Barkhad Abdi.
Prior to the bridge takeover scene, Paul Greengrass told Barkhad Abdi to "own it." Abdi lost sleep the previous night in anticipation of his first acting experience. The next day, his improvisation of the line "look at me, look at me, I'm the captain now" was the clip used in his awards considerations. After Abdi and his fellow actors dropped character, Tom Hanks' first words to Barkhad were "so, you're from Minnesota."
During an interview on NPR's "Fresh Air", Tom Hanks said the first time he met the actors playing the Somali pirates was when they started filming the pirates taking over the bridge. Paul Greengrass mentioned he did this intentionally to build up tension between the actors on board the ship and the actors playing the Somali pirates.
Barkhad Abdi only earned 65,000 dollars for his role and after it was complete he went to work at his brother's mobile phone store in Minneapolis.
"Muse: Look at me. Captain Richard Phillips: Sure. Muse: Look at me. Captain Richard Phillips: Sure. Muse: I'm the captain now."
"Captain Richard Phillips: There's gotta be something other than being a fisherman and kidnapping people. Muse: Maybe in America, Irish. Maybe in America."
