Director Yash Chopra offered Rekha the role of Chandni, since she had played a character called Chandni in his previous film Silsila (1981). She turned it down, but recommended Sridevi for the role.
Director Yash Chopra took his son Aditya Chopra on as assistant director. This began Aditya Chopra's foray into filmmaking and would provide him with valuable experience and knowledge for the making of his blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).
