The film's working title was "The Last of the Independents". Director Don Siegel wanted this to be the final title of the movie but in the end it became a tagline on the movie's main poster. The phrase is also the motto of Walter Matthau's crop-dusting company in the film.
The crop duster that Varrick (Walter Matthau) attempts to escape in at the end of the movie was destroyed in Oakdale, California on 31 December 1976 during a crop dusting operation. Upon starting a swath run the pilot of the BOEING A75N1 failed to see and avoid wires and crashed. The 33 year old pilot was killed.
Character Maynard Boyle's line, "They're gonna strip you naked and go to work on you with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch," is paraphrased in Pulp Fiction (1994) by character Marsellus Wallace.
Walter Matthau's character makes love repeatedly to Felicia Farr's character. She was the wife of his longtime comedic partner, Jack Lemmon.
Walter Matthau was not fond of this film. Don Siegel would later say Matthau hurt this film's box office by publicly stating that he did not like the film nor even understand it.
"Charley Varrick: You know what dirty money is? That's the kind of money you can't declare on your income tax. Well, when certain people get that kind of money, what they do is send it out of the country to invest, and when it comes back, it's clean. Harman Sullivan: So? Charley Varrick: So maybe that little bank was a drop, a collection point. Maybe all this was on its way out of the country. Harman Sullivan: Fantastic! We lucked out! Charley Varrick: More like crapped out. It's ten-to-one this stuff belongs to the Mafia. This is gambling money skimmed off the top, whore money, dope money. Harman Sullivan: What's the difference? Charley Varrick: The difference is the Mafia kills you, no trial, no judge. They never stop looking for you, not 'til you're dead. I'd rather have ten F.B.I.s after me."
"Charley Varrick: I like your bed. You may find this hard to believe but I've never slept on a round bed. Sybil Fort: Is that so? Charley Varrick: What's the best way? North, south, east, or west? Sybil Fort: That depends on what you had in mind. Charley Varrick: What I had in mind was boxing the compass."
