The film was the official submission of Australia for the Best Foreign Language film category of the 87th Academy Awards 2015 but in the end was not nominated. Australia's first ever film to be nominated in this category would be about a couple of years later with 'Tanna' (2015).
Charlie keeps a beloved photograph of himself and other dancers performing at the opening of the Sydney Opera House, dancing before Queen Elizabeth. In reality, David Gulpilil who plays Charlie was indeed a 20 year-old dancer at the opening of the Sydney Opera House who did in fact perform before the Queen, just like his character.
The 2013 Rolf de Heer film 'Charlie's Country' has at least nine actors who have had prominent roles in earlier previous Rolf De Heer movies: David Gulpilil starred in both 'Ten Canoes' and 'The Tracker'; Gary Sweet starred in both 'The Tracker' and 'Alexandra's Project'; Wayne Anthony starred in 'Dr Plonk'; John Brumpton starred in 'Dance Me To My Song'; Damon Gameau starred in 'The Tracker'; and Dan Wyllie, Luke Ford, Gary Waddell and Bojana Novakovic all starred in the 'The King is Dead!'.
One of three theatrical feature film collaborations of actor Gary Sweet and writer-producer-director Rolf de Heer. The titles are: 'The Tracker' (2002), 'Alexandra's Project' (2003), and 'Charlie's Country' (2013).
The fourteenth theatrical feature film directed by director Rolf de Heer.
