The producers said that her role will not be recast, but they will add new female roles (an emergency pediatrician, a charge nurse and a young first-year resident), before the filming begins in September.
Dr. Natalie Manning's name was originally Lilly before the show aired, as clearly seen on her lab coat in early promotional pictures, but was changed before the pilot episode.
