Vinessa Shaw, who plays Deirdre Dawson, was at some point considered for the Annette Hargrove part in Cruel Intentions (1999), according to director Roger Kumble. Reese Witherspoon was eventually offered the role and cast.
Jenna Ortega was considered for the role of Caroline Merteuil, and Shawn Mendes was the first choice to play Lucien Belmont. JoJo Siwa was considered for CeCe but the producers decided to go with an unknown and cast Sara Silva.
