Lars von Trier has said that each morning before filming, Björk would say "Mr. von Trier, I despise you," and spit at him.
Despite acclaim at Cannes, the film did not fare well with British critics, subsequently affecting its box office performance. Thinking that the film was being underserved, its British distributors Film Four offered a money back guarantee if people didn't enjoy it. This swelled its attendance figures considerably with only 5 people asking for their money back.
It took Lars von Trier a whole year to convince Björk to play the lead role.
Björk's first leading role in a studio-produced feature film (The Juniper Tree (1990)) was an independent film project. During the shooting, she left the set. No one knew where she was and no one was able to contact her. Shooting was suspended indefinitely. She came back after three days - as can be seen in Von Trier's 100 Eyes (2000).
Lars von Trier originally cast himself as the angry man who chastises Selma (Björk) and Kathy (Catherine Deneuve) in the movie theater. However, due to the contentious on-set relationship between himself and Björk, he feared that he might end up losing control and overacting, so the part went to Michael Flessas instead.
"Lines on screen: They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be."
"Selma: You like the movies, don't you? Bill Houston: I love the movies. I just love the musicals. Selma: But isn't it annoying when they do the last song in the films? Bill Houston: Why? Selma: Because you just know when it goes really big... and the camera goes like out of the roof... and you just know it's going to end. I hate that. I would leave just after the next to last song... and the film would just go on forever."
