Actual trial lawyer Rob Bilott and wife Sarah can be briefly glimpsed at the Ohio Chemical Alliance Annual Dinner right after Mark Ruffalo (as Bilott) and Anne Hathaway (Sarah Bilott) enter the crowded room (32:30).
The production name for the film was "Dry Run" which is the name of a place important in the story.
The opening sequence is a lovely homage to Jaws (1975). Both films open in 1975 with some teenagers going skinny dipping and one young man staying on the water's edge. There are several unnerving underwater shots creating a mood of tension before the teenagers are scared off by the riverboat. However, this time, the killer in the water is the chemicals.
