The film was launched as " Bodyguard" with Anil Kapoor , Sunny Deol and Zeba Bhaktiar. When Zeba had to leave the country due to VISA issues the script was changed to a comedy and Sunny Deol also opted out . Shah Rukh Khan was signed for Govinda's role. Due to date hassles he also opted out . Thats when David Dhawan asked his favorite Govinda to do the role.
Johny Lever received his first Filmfare Award for Best Comedian for his work in the film.
The film was released on the same day as another David Dhawan film, Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi (1997).
The film marked Anil Kapoor's first film for the M.K.D. Films banner. Years prior Manmohan Desai had made some nasty comments about Anil Kapoor . When questioned about promising newcomers, Desai left out Anil Kapoor. He stated that leading men with mustaches did not become successful stars in Hindi films. He said Anil Kapoor would never become a big star in films. This was quite unusual as Ketan Desai was working with Jackie Shroff in Allah Rakha and Shroff had a mustache. Years later Kapoor finally worked for Desai's banner with Deewana Mastana.
When Shahrukh Khan was doing the film, it was titled "Dum Dum Diga Diga".
