In January 2019, this show was honored with a large public mural featuring all five main characters. It was painted on the wall of the Badgers Bar and Restaurant, which is located at 18 Orchard Street, Derry. In Northern Ireland, it is a tradition to paint murals on the outside of buildings, with the purpose to depict the region's cultural and political history.
Since its Netflix debut in December 2018, this show has developed a global cult-following, which came unexpected for the cast and crew. For instance, while visiting the US, Nicola Coughlan and Dylan Llewellyn were surprised to be recognized by people, with many calling Llewellyn the "wee English fella".
Although the main characters are at least 15 years of age, most of the actors were actually in the middle of their twenties at the time of filming. Additionally, Nicola Coughlan, who appears to be the youngest of the group, was already 30 when production began.
According to writer and producer Lisa McGee, each character has a favourite film: Erin always says that her favourite film is Three Colors: Blue (1993), despite not having seen it. Her favourite film is Beetlejuice (1988).Orla's favourite film is Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995).Michelle's favourite is The Exorcist (1973), mainly to "quote a certain line about what the Priest's Mother does in hell".Clare's favourite film is The Little Mermaid (1989).James is a true film buff. Although he claims that his favourite is The Godfather (1972), it is in fact Ghost (1990).
During filming of the 12th of July orange parade scene (Unionist/Protestant event) in West Belfast (the mainly Nationalist/Catholic area) some local people began to throw objects. This controversial scene was even mentioned in the local press at the time of filming.
