Dhamaal is about four friends; Boman Contractor (Aashish Chaudhary), who lives a wealthy lifestyle with his eccentric dad, Nari (Asrani); dim-witted Manav (Jaaved Jaffrey), his elder brother Adi (Arshad Warsi); and Roy (Ritesh Deshmukh). All four are afflicted by the get-rich-quick virus. Their fortunes take a turn after they accidentally bump into an underworld don Bose (Prem Chopra) whilst he is about to die, who tells them about a hidden treasure in St. Sebastian Garden, Goa including ₹10crores. The group race towards Goa in Nari's stolen car, little knowing that their plans will soon be foiled, albeit hilariously, by Police Inspector Kabir Nayak (Sanjay Dutt), who wants the money at any cost.

The very first scene where we see Ritiesh Deshmukh leaning to a man in car and saying: Sir! Is samay hum duniya ke sabse safe jagah pe hai (Sir! We are at the safest place in the world.) and than the bomb blasts. This scene is actually taken from 'Johnny English'
Sanjay Dutt was in jail during the release but as the film was shot in sync sound it didn't cause any problems.
First film of Inder Kumar and rare Hindi film which did not have a lead actress.
Tusshar Kapoor, Sohail Khan, Aftab Shivdasani were signed for roles but later opted out.
The scene where Sanjay Dutt goes to the toilet, in the background the song "Nayak Nahi khalnayak hoon main" is played which also starred Sanjay Dutt in the film "khalnayak (1993)"
