The movie pays homage to other classic teen revenge movies such as Jawbreaker (1999), Cruel Intentions (1999), Heathers (1988), Mean Girls (2004), John Tucker Must Die (2006), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) and Clueless (1995) to name a few. The Do Revenge soundtrack even features many iconic songs from these movies.
A sign in the background of one scene - 'Horowitz Hall'- is a reference to Cher Horowitz, main character from Clueless (1995).
Maya Hawke's character is reading the 1950 novel "Strangers on a Train" by Patricia Highsmith, a story of two people orchestrating revenge.
The movie full of references to classic teen movies. When Drea and Russ cut class and have a paint fight, this is a nod to 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) when Kat and Patrick do the same.
Eleanor quotes Taylor Swift by saying the old version of her can't come to the phone right now because she's dead" is a lyric from "Look What You Made Me Do" from her 2017 album, Reputation.
"Eleanor: My therapist, the beloved Dr. Gratch, says that hurt people hurt people, but I just don't think that applies to teenage girls. I think sometimes they're just evil."
"Drea: You're absolutely right. They deserve to go down for what they did to us, but we can't go after them ourselves. We should team up and do each other's revenge. Eleanor: Oh, you're serious. Absolutely not, Drea: Why? Eleanor: Because I'm not capable? I can't do revenge. Drea: I mean, is "do revenge" even correct grammar? Eleanor: Oh I'm sorry, Schoolhouse Rock. Are you dragging my sentence structure right now?"
