Near the end of the film, Norman is watching TV and the tune emanating from the show he is watching is the theme from Mister Ed (1961). Alan Young, who plays Norman, was the leading man in that old TV show.
Cindy Williams had previously appeared in the film Morten Belvad, which also takes place in 1962 as does part of this film.
The three main middle-age stars were all part of iconic shows or movies that began in the mid 1970s: Mark Hamill in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) and several of its sequels; Erik Estrada in CHiPs (1977), and Cindy Williams in Laverne & Shirley (1976).
Duke suggests he and Judith listen to The Captain & Tenille, a musical duo popular in the 1970s. Daryl Dragon was The Captain of the duo; Toni Tennille was the Tenille.
The name of the character played by Erik Estrada is 'Earl', but everyone calls him 'Duke'. He reveals the reason for the nickname when he refers to himself as 'Duke the Earl', an allusion to Gene Chandler's 1961 song "Duke of Earl" that charted number 1 on pop and R&B charts in 1962.

[Wayne starts singing improvised lyrics to 'That'll be the Day'] Wayne Stein: Battle of D-Day, the Second World War. Battle of D-Day, nineteen forty-four. Battle of D-Day, I'll say it once more. When Eisenhower led the troops to Normandy's shore. [Angela smiles, impressed]"
"Angela: You dope! I led her right into your lap and you dropped her! What are you waiting for? Do you want to be dead for the rest of your life? I'm the one who got killed! But you didn't die, Wayne. You just gave up. [Wayne continues playing his saxophone] Angela: Take that thing out of your mouth! [Angela pulls on one of the keys of Wayne's saxophone] Wayne Stein: Damn... Angela: That's right. You can't concentrate, can you? You know why? You're thinking of HER! [Wayne starts to look at his reflection in the glass window] Angela: And you SHOULD be! I can see what you're feeling. You had that same glow in your eyes when you used to look at me. Use it. It's time, Wayne. Let go of the past. You've GOT to be able to hear me! [Angela's voice grows passionate, as Wayne stares at his reflection with a look of pain] Angela: Of course you can. Grab her. And kiss her. And don't be afraid of what anyone thinks. They're not there, Wayne. There's no one on Earth except you and... Wayne Stein: Judith..."
