At a screening in San Francisco, director Bo Burnham said he originally intended for all the young characters to communicate with one another over Facebook. When his star, Elsie Fisher, saw his script, however, she said, "No one uses Facebook." He then made that a line in the movie and had the characters use Instagram and Snapchat instead.
Speaking on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, director Bo Burnham said that technology company Apple was going to provide laptops and phones for the film for free, but they were unhappy with the scene where the iPhone broke when it got thrown. As a result, the laptops shown in the film were those belonging to the crew and the broken iPhone scene was kept in.
On the Jimmy Kimmel show director Bo Burnham reveals that after star Elsie Fisher finished filming for Eighth Grade she started her first year of high school, where she did not receive a part in her school play.
Filming began one week after actress Elsie Fisher graduated eighth grade.
Bo Burnham deliberately made his protagonist a young girl because it avoided easy comparisons to his own career trajectory beginning with YouTube videos, and because when doing research into vlogs by young teenagers he noticed, "The boys talked about video games and the girls talked about their souls."
"Kayla: Do I make you sad? I don't know. Sometimes I think that when I'm older, I'll have a daughter of my own or something... and I feel like if she was like me, then being her mum would make me sad all the time. I'd love her because she's my daughter, but I think if she turned out like me that being her mum would make me really sad."
"Mark Day: You're wrong. If you grow up to have a daughter like you, she will make you so so happy. Being your dad makes me so happy, Kayla. You don't know; you don't know how happy you make me. It's beyond... I can't describe it. It's so easy to love you. It's so easy to... to be proud of you. I'm not just saying this. I swear to God, I'm not just saying this. Sure, sometimes if I see you're upset or having a rough day, then I feel sad. But that kind of being sad, that sort of day-to-day sad, or worrying that I do, that's not... Kayla, always beneath all that, I am always so unbelievably happy that I get to be your dad."
