TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

After a very bloody battle, Learoyd (Nick Nolte) proclaims he will never raise his hand against another man. The date and time are 6th August 1945 at 8:00 o'clock. This is also the approximate time of the Hiroshima atomic bombing during World War II.

The character of Captain Fairbourne (Nigel Havers) is loosely based on Major Tom Harrisson, commander of Semut 1, Z Force. During World War II, Harrisson parachuted into north Borneo and organized the hill tribes to resist the Japanese occupation troops.

The inspiration for the character of Learoyd (Nick Nolte) was James Brooke, the White Rajah of Sarawak.

This was originally the best film that he had made according to the film's writer-director John Milius until studio interference ruined it. Milius once said: "I, as usual, was attacked viciously but in time it's come to be regarded as one of my best". Milius has also said he believes he originally had made a "great film".

The film was "completely cut to pieces" by studio executives at Orion Pictures according to writer-director John Milius.

Popular Dialogues

"Col. Ferguson: No one moves very far out of line. When you're young you think you're blazing a trail. One day you look down and notice it's a beaten track."

"Learoyd: Don't cry, little one. Don't cry. I'll be with you in the songs they sing in the longhouses. And then when you're older and you have children, well, you'll sing the songs to them. And then they'll sing to their children. And the songs, the songs will make you strong. And you won't need me anymore."
