IMDbThis marks the first time Henry Fonda played a villain in a theatrical film. He played another villain this same year in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968).
Ed Begley and Inger Stevens were co-stars in this film and Hang 'Em High (1968), westerns from the same year both of which included the "Rock of Ages" hymn on their soundtracks. Two years later, they died two days apart on April 28 and 30, 1970, respectively, both in Hollywood.
James Stewart's revolver was a Colt M1909 double-action .45 Long Colt with an 1873 Colt ejector rod and shroud fitted to the side of the barrel to give the appearance of a single action revolver. Notice Stewart opened the cylinder out of the frame to check if it is loaded, the cylinder ejector rod and lanyard loop on the handle.
A section of the showdown between James Stewart and Henry Fonda includes the dialogue parts: "....dollars a week and the homemade badge", "you got no business laying your life on the line", and "I'll ride out." These lines are used by Tír na nÓg (2019) in their song "Cinema" from their 1973 LP "Strong In The Sun".
The cast includes four winners of Academy Awards for acting: James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Dean Jaggar and Ed Begley.
"Johnny Cobb: [to Whittier, who is reluctant to give him a gun] Search for a place where there are no bruises and tie it up with a ribbon, and tell yourself that what's inside is the sum total of your life, and what I didn't see was the day a man decides not to face the world is the day he better step out of it. Now give me that gun!"
"Bob Larkin: It's a lesson I learned a long time ago. A man worth shootin' is a man worth killin'."
