The book Five Weeks in a Balloon by Jules Verne was in the public domain, and two producers raced to complete film versions of the novel. Flight of the Lost Balloon (1961) premiered on December 28, 1961, eight months before Five Weeks in a Balloon was released on August 22, 1962.
Peter Lorre appeared in three films based on novels by Jules Verne: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), and Five Weeks in a Balloon. The latter two also featured Sir Cedric Hardwicke.
The character Donald O'Shea, one of the focal points in the film, was created by the screenplay. He is not in the source novel.
Peter Lorre, Barbara Eden, and Henry Daniell also appeared in Irwin Allen's previous movie Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961).
