TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

In 2011, Thandiwe Newton told InStyle Magazine that during the filming of this movie, its director, John Duigan, coerced her into starting a sexual relationship with him, despite the fact that she was 16 and he was 39. She clarified in the interview that the relationship was not strictly illegal, since she was above the age of consent in Australia, but that it left her feeling "self-destructive" and not "in control of the situation," and she had to have therapy later to come to terms with its ramifications.

Intended to be the Australian-born Nicole Kidman's farewell to Australian cinema; by the time the film went into production, she had received international acclaim for her part in Dead Calm (1989), and was being courted by US studios to appear in American productions. She wouldn't star in another Australian film for another decade, (Moulin Rouge! (2001)). As a result of Kidman's fame, she received top billing and was prominently featured in print advertising for the film, despite only appearing in a few scenes. Conversely, star Noah Taylor appeared in print ads only in silhouette.

In 2021, Thandiwe Newton revealed John Duigan took the original spelling of her name for her character, and then 'misspelled' her name as 'Thandie' for her official credit. The misspelling had stuck for all her credits thereafter, until 2021 when she reclaimed the original spelling of her name.

Film debut of Thandiwe Newton. NOTE: She co-starred here with Nicole Kidman; she later co-starred with Kidman's ex, Tom Cruise, in Mission: Impossible II (2000).

There are clips from a Tarzan movie(s) seen when Danny is thinking about Africa. There are no details given in the credits about the source(s) of these clips..

Popular Dialogues

"Danny Embling: I don't think fate is a creature or a lady... like some people say. It's a tide of events sweeping us along. But I'm not a fatalist, because I believe you can swim against it... and sometimes grasp the hands of the clock face... and steal a few precious minutes. If you don't... you're just cartwheeled along. Before you know it, the magic opportunities lost. And for the rest of your life... it lingers on in that part of your mind... which dreams the very best dreams... taunting and tantalizing you with what might have been."

"Danny Embling: Suddenly, there were much bigger worlds again, and some small place in them for me."
