Tony Gilroy wrote the screenplay in 1986, and envisioned it as a broad Preston Sturges-style comedy. He successfully used it as a writing sample to get an agent and other work. In his original draft, the couple invites the President of the United States to their wedding. When the movie was finally made in France for television in 1992, it was rewritten to be set in Paris, and for the Pope to be the person invited.
