TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

This series was part of a trend in the 1990s, where old animes were modernized for a new generation. However, unlike many other animes that were updated, the creators decided to maintain a retro atmosphere. The characters were designed in accordance with Mitsuteru Yokoyama's 1960s style; the vehicles were taken from the 20th century and reworked (i.e. steampunked); and the mechanical designs fuse high technology and old-school engineering (exposed rivets and hidden weaponry). This set a trend for utilizing the retro aesthetic in animes.

According to Yasuhiro Imagawa, the series was influenced by Chinese "wuxia" tales (martial arts adventures with superhuman fighters) and "jiang hu" tales (which feature clashes between clans and revolutionary plots), and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) (a world of incredible characters).

Giant robo's headdress bears a crest with a unicorn on it. In Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot (1967), Giant Robo (and its master Daisaku) were members of a top secret peacekeeping group known as Unicorn.

The character Kenji Murasame had appeared in Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot (1967), but in that series he was just a normal police inspector, while in this series he is an immortal superhuman.

The series director Yasuhiro Imagawa is a fan of early anime pioneer Mitsuteru Yokoyama, whose work was adapted for this series.
