TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

After viewing footage of the stabbing of Meredith Hunter police identified Alan Passaro, a local Hell's Angel, as the man who did the stabbing, arrested him and charged him with murder. At his trial, however, closer examination of the footage showed that Hunter had pulled a gun before Passaro pulled his knife. Passaro was acquitted on grounds of self-defense.

According to Albert Maysles (in 1999 while he visited UCLA), George Lucas was one of the cameramen for this shoot. Unfortunately his camera jammed after shooting about 100 feet of film that night. All of his footage was deemed unacceptable and wasn't used in any version of the final product. However, according to Joel Selvin's extensively researched book Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day, one shot - a long pan of the dazed crowd from the distance - remains in the final cut.

Besides The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane and The Flying Burrito Brothers, there were several other bands that appeared at Altamont but did not appear in the film. They were Crosby Stills Nash & Young and Santana. Grateful Dead were also scheduled to perform but backed out after hearing what had happened earlier in the day.

Besides Ike Turner and Tina Turner, the other opening act on The Rolling Stones tour was B.B. King, who does not appear in the film.

Besides Meredith Hunter, three other people died during the festival. Two deaths were caused by a hit-and-run car accident and one young man fell into a ditch and died of suffocation.

Popular Dialogues

"Grace Slick: You don't hassle with anybody in particular. You gotta keep your bodies off each other unless you intend love. People get weird, and you need people like the Angels to keep people in line. But the Angels also - you know, you don't bust people in the head - for nothing. So both sides are fucking up temporarily; let's not keep FUCKING UP!"

"Mick Jagger: Who's fighting and what for? Why are we fighting? Why are we fighting? We don't want to fight. Come on!"
