Season one was filmed in New York entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Executive producer Tina Fey previously collaborated with Paula Pell in 30 Rock (2006), Sisters (2015) and Wine Country (2019), with Renée Elise Goldsberry also in Sisters, and with Busy Philipps in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015) and Busy Tonight (2018).
Alf Musik, portrayed by Stephen Colbert, is emulating the real Swedish songwriter, Max Martin, both in physical appearance and songwriting prowess. Martin wrote hits for/with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, and more.
Girls5eva's album featured in the trailer for the show is titled "W.O.R.L.D. D.O.M.I.N.A.T.I.O.N." According to the album's cover art, it stands for "We're Outstanding Real Living Dolls Dancing Our Music Into National Acclaim In Our Nation." However, it is missing a word for the T in "Domination."
Renée Elise Goldsberry (Wickie Roy), Daniel Breaker (Scott), and Andrew Rannells (Kev Hamlin) were all cast members in the Broadway production of Hamilton, though not at the same time. Goldsberry created the role of Angelica Schuyler in the original cast and left the show in 2016. Breaker stepped into the role of Aaron Burr in 2017 until the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Rannells temporarily replaced Jonathan Groff in the role of King George III from October 27 to November 29, 2015, while Groff fulfilled prearranged filming commitments.
