Writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer wrote the title role specifically for Michael Keaton. "I wrote it 100 percent with him in mind," she said, "to the point where if he had said no, I would have buried it and myself in the backyard."

Michael Keaton and Andie MacDowell will once again work alongside each other having done so in Multiplicity (1996)

This is the first time Michael Keaton and Kevin Pollack have been in a movie together. However, both were directed by Ron Howard in their second films. Keaton's second feature film was Night Shift (82) and Pollack's second feature film was Willow (88).
