Storyboards by Jeffrey Henderson revealed that there were plans for Bruce Campbell to cameo as Mysterio in Sam Raimi's canceled Spider-Man 4 as part of "a montage of C and D- list villains that we knew would never be used as main antagonists." Raimi later confirmed these plans, "I miss the really great cameo we had designed for Bruce Campbell. [Mysterio] was one of the possibilities. We had other things in mind, too, but that was one of them." Raimi and Campbell have been friends since high school, and Campbell has appeared in nearly all of Raimi's films, including all three of his Spider-Man films. His appearance as Mysterio was intended to tie together all the previous Spider-Man cameos.
